Whether it's Mom, Dad, or another senior in your life, it won't be easy to tell them you're leaving for vacation again. Telling them about your plans sooner rather than later can help things go a lot more smoothly. Here are 5 things you should definitely discuss with them.
- If you usually take them with you, let them know why you're going away without them this time. Make sure they don't think they're a burden to you. Point out aspects of the trip that might be hard on them physically. Or let them know that it's important for you to spend some time bonding with your spouse and/or children.
- Discuss your itinerary with them, including details that might not seem to be important. If they are clear on your exact dates of departure and return, and if they know where you are staying, they will feel more secure. Tell them how they can get in touch with you, and leave a list of emergency contacts in their local area.
- Talk to them about things you normally help out with, like groceries and medication reminders. If they can get to the supermarket alone, write out a list. If they need more help, make arrangements for someone to step in while you're away. Discuss and write down their medication schedule. Make sure they have enough pills as well as refills.
