How To Let Your Senior Dad Know It's Time To Stop Driving

Adult-Son-Talking-To-senior-LR.jpgDriving requires patience, attention, and reflexes. Unfortunately, as we get older, our skill level in those areas decreases. If you have noticed these changes in your senior Dad, you have good reason for concern. For his safety, it might be time for him to stop driving. Here are a few pointers to help you discuss it with him.

  1. Speak with empathy. Although it might seem like a simple matter of making a logical decision, strong emotions are involved. It is not easy to accept the limitations that come with aging. And driving is a privilege he has enjoyed for decades. So be kind and gracious in the words you use.
  2. Be prepared to overcome objections. Giving up this portion of his freedom will be tough for him to accept. So he will likely defend his right to stay behind the wheel. Knowing him well, you can think ahead of time of what his rebuttal might be and prepare accordingly.
  3. Have a transportation plan in place. Things will go more smoothly if Dad knows what his alternatives are. He'll still need to get to appointments, run errands, and possibly enjoy some leisure. Speak to family and friends ahead of time to see who might be able to help out.

Don't be surprised if you need to have this conversation more than once. With patience and persistence though, Dad will see that it is wise for him to give up his keys, for his own safety and that of others.
